Make Your Backyard Birds Happy With Dabb's Bird Batter

My birds love this peanut butter batter!  It gets its name from my friend Evelyn Dabbs in South Carolina who came up with the recipe.

It is easy to make and holds up well in all types of weather. Give it a try.

Here we go!

Dry Ingredients:

4 cups yellow corn meal
2 cups flour (any type of white flour, but could be whole wheat I suppose)
1/2 cup sugar

Wet ingredients:

4 sticks of butter (margarine is not a good for birds, or some say people either)
1 18 oz jar of peanut butter (crunchy or smooth)

Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl and set aside.

Melt butter in microwave. I've found that 2 minutes and 25 seconds is just about right. Make sure the bowl is large enough to hold everything, including the dry ingredients.

Important! Remove all that aluminum stuff from top of peanut butter jar including little itsy bitsy pieces. I scrape it off with a knife, but BE CAREFUL! Sometimes I get the huge peanut butter jars and spoon it into an empty 18 oz. jar. Put lid back on jar and microwave for approximately one minute.

Use a spatula to get all the melted peanut butter into the melted butter (won't be runny). Carefully mix the butter and peanut butter together until it becomes smooth and completely blended - takes about a minute.

Now pour dry ingredients into the wet. Start mixing it all together until it becomes completely blended. It should still be rather goopy.

Simply put it aside and it will set up overnight. You can speed it up by putting it in the fridge if you want.

Once set up you are ready! You can make it into butter batter balls or simply just scoop out the appropriate amount for whatever you use to hold suet. I store it at room temperature in a big Tupperware container.

Enjoy watching the birds go after it!
